We have tons of Christmas books that we love and read over and over, but one that we find ourselves coming back to again and again more than most throughout the month of December for the past few years is A Pussycat's Christmas by Margaret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon). I don't even like cats and I love this book. The quite rhythmic prose is relaxing, while at the same time the vibrant imagery is exhilarating. I hope Seth never out grows this book!

We had so much fun learning about Australia with Seth's cultural exchange packet. It came with a neat letter with all kinds of information about the country, coloring sheets, flags, stickers and more. The highlight was definitely the sample of Vegemite! It is a staple in Australia but we all HATED it! Seth made such faces ran around the kitchen desperately looking for a beverage and for some reason stripped down to his underwear. The dog wouldn't even taste it. We laughed so hard and had so much fun. The Vegemite sample alone made all of the work I did for the exchange worth it! We also had a good time watching the Men at Work "Land Down Under" video on YouTube.

A Mouse in the House

My mom would probably not love the idea of me blogging about this, but I have no choice!

The day after Thanksgiving, we were decorating my mom's house. Mark handed me a box down from the attic and I saw something scurry out of the corner of my eye. I dropped the box and screamed. Mark came down and checked the box out. A mother mouse had made a home inside of the nativity and was nursing four baby mice. We took them to the church at the end of the road and released them in the back of the parking lot in a wooded area with some old building supplies. Seth was loving every minute of it - probably as much as my mom was hating it! Their new home looked like a perfect place to raise a young mouse family and I hope they will be very happy there.

Seth had been complaining about a sore tooth and my first thought was, "Oh no! Another cavity!" I was planning on making an appointment at the dentist. When we were brushing his teeth one morning we noticed the slightest bit of pink when he spit. I also noticed that the two bottom teeth have a larger than usual gap in them. Upon closer inspection, he has not one, but two loose teeth. He has been so jealous of other kids in his class who have lost teeth and is super excited. I thought it was too soon for this. Seth got his very first report card the other day and he is doing an excellent job! We surprised him with a Cad Bane Lego Star Wars Minfig that we had stashed away for Christmas. The Pumpkin Book Project

For school, Seth had to turn a pumpkin into a book he had read. We had so much fun doing this project. We read the book The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear and painted the pumpkin to look like a strawberry. We turned an egg into a mouse and put a toy ladder on the side of the pumpkin. We also had fun looking at all of the other pumpkins at school. We are already planning our pumpkin for next year!

For Halloween, we did the traditional Trick or Treat Crawl. Since Mark wouldn't be home in time to do Seth's makeup, we had agreed that e would just wear his rocker costume that he wore to school. About five minutes before we were to meet Stacy and Trey, Seth decided that he just HAD to be Gene Simmons again. I quickly threw on some makeup amid tears and wiggles and it paled in comparison to Mark's makeup job, but Seth was happy and that's all that matters. We picked up Stacy and Trey, who was dressed like Spider-Man, and headed over to Mimi's. Then we headed back to Stacy's, met up with Mark & Bobby and Trick or Treated our way to and from Papa's house, meeting a delightful Chihuahua/Devil mix named Randall along the way. The boys had a great time and we made it home in time for bedtime.

Cultural Exchange

Seth and I finally finished our cultural exchange packets last week. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. We sent off 12 packages all over the world. We in turn will get 12 packages back. We already have gotten packages from Sweden, England, Mexico, Japan, Barbados, Malaysia and Australia. I haven't given them to Seth yet - he will get one each month in the "mail" and we will learn all about different cultures. Below is our (edited) letter from our package.

Dear Friend,

    My name is Seth and I am 5 years old. I live on the south east coast of the United States. I live with my Mom and Dad and I have a (half) brother and sister who are grown. I see them all of the time and they come over every Tuesday for dinner. I have a pet dog, a miniature dachshund named Pup-Pup. I am in Kindergarten and I go to a foreign language charter school. This is it’s first year and this is the first school of it’s kind in our state. I have lots of wonderful grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and we see each other all of the time. We always have lots of fun.

    I love to do lots of fun stuff like jumping on my trampoline, swimming in my Mimi’s pool, making crafts, playing games on my ipod touch, helping my mom cook and going on fun outings with my playgroup. I have lots of fun toys. Some of my favorites are Legos (especially Star Wars Legos), Playmobil, Imaginext Batman and Build-a-Bear. I love to have family game night, family movie night and puzzle time. One of my favorite movies is called Alvin and the Chipmunks. My favorite game is Mouse Trap. My mom reads to me every night and this one of my favorite things. We read lots of books. I am learning to read now too. We just started doing chapter books and right now we are reading How to Train Your Dragon. My favorite book is Where the Wild Things Are. I also get to listen to an audio book as I fall asleep each night. Now, I am listening to Dot and the Kangaroo.

    We love to take family trips. This summer we took a beach trip and a lake trip to. Some of the fun things we did on vacation were boating, fishing, visiting an alpaca farm, swimming, taking a day trip to Savannah, having a sand sculpture building contest, visiting a lighthouse and enjoying time with all of our family. There is always lots of smiles and laughter.

The other day we hosted Jar-O-Lanterns at the park with our playgroup. This was a quick and fun craft. We cut the shapes for the face out of tape and placed it where we wanted on the jars. Then, we painted the jars with orange paint. When it dried we peeled off the tape and the faces were left clear. We put a candle in and they look very cute glowing on our porch at night!

Mark and I chaperoned Seth's first ever field trip to the state fair. There were actually a bunch of chaperones, so we only had one other child assigned to us. When the teacher was reading out the buddy list Seth and his buddy looked at each other and gave the thumbs up, so that was a good sign. We had lots of fun and can't wait until the next field trip.

We have been reading How to Train Your Dragon and I think Seth was inspired. He wanted to write his own book and we had lots of fun doing this the other day. He wants to send it to Grandma "Beezurich", so I wanted to make sure to preserve it here. Without further ado, the world premire of Moldy Dragons by Seth Roper.

Chapter One:

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Snowman. He had a dragon for a pet. The dragon bit the boy.

Snowman said, "Ouch! Ouch! Stop biting me. I'll give you as many fish as you want if you stop biting me."

The moldy dragon went diving for fish. He sank the bottom of the ocean inside a sunken ship.

Inside the ship he makes a friend.

He says, "Hi. My name is Risko Calceen."

The other dragon says, "Hi. My name is Crayon."

Then, Crayon and Risko go back to the shore to take a breath.

Risko and Crayon go to their underwater house.

They hid from a shark inside of logs.

Risko Calceen and Crayon find a treasure chest inside there. There are golden dragon masks in there. They try on the masks and take the whole treasure back to their home.

Risko and Crayon go back to the boy. They say, "We had quite an adventure."

Then they give him the treasure. "I'm sorry for biting you." said Risko.

We have been playing a game on the ipod called Smelly Cat, where you try to get the dirty cat into the bathtub. When he lands in the tub, he puts cucumbers on his eyes and his hands behind his head. Ever since Seth saw this, he had asked 100 questions about the cucumbers over the eyes and really wanted to try it. I don't think he stayed still long enough to get the full benefit of the cucumbers, but it was fun to try!

I was going through a box of pictures and found the speech that I made - or attempted to make - at Dana and Domingo's wedding. It was five years ago in June and it's amazing to think of all of the things that have happened since then. Four babies for our family, the loss of Dad and Papa - a few sad times but lots more happy ones.

I only vaguely remember when Dana was born, but I have heard the story all of my life. Apparently, when I first peered into the nursery, I proclaimed, "She's just as cute as me!" When it was time to go I threw a temper tantrum, because I wanted to bring my baby sister home with me. A few days later they actually brought her home. What was I thinking? She cried, whined and took up all of Mom and Dad's time. So, I spent the next eighteen years trying to figure out how to send her back to where she came from. But somewhere along the way, Dana went from annoying little sister to best friend. Before I couldn't stand her tagging along, but now I can't imagine going more than a day or so without talking to her. I'm so happy that you and Domingo found each other. He is a wonderful person and I'm happy to now call him my brother. I wish the two of you all the happiness in the world.

School Project

Loving the puffed up concentration cheeks!

Seth had his first school project this week and we had to make a mobile of family pictures. We were supposed to use 5-7 pics, but we couldn't narrow it down to less than 10 - and with that the aunts and uncles had to be represented by the cousins! Seth and I glued the pictures to construction paper and punched holes in the tops and Mark tied them on to dowels with fishing line. I hope to comes back to us, because it turned out really great and I want to hang it in his room.

For the passed few weeks, Seth's lunchbox has been coming home practically full! Each day I ask him why he's not eating much of his lunch and he never quite gives me a good answer. I have packed all of his favorite foods and even sent a note to his teacher asking her to encourage him to eat. On Thursday, he came home and the only thing he had touched was about two ounces of his V8 Fusion. Finally, Mark was able to get to the bottom of things. Apparently, a while back, Seth was eating his lunch and a couple of girls were laughing at what he had packed. Now he's afraid to take his food out, because he thinks they'll make fun of him. I thought we had talked it out, but today he came home with a full lunch box again. I'm not sure what to do. Sigh.

One day Seth was watching Busy Town and I heard him yelling at the television, "I'm not a mother!!" When I asked what he was yelling about, he said, "This lady is saying 'If you are the mother of a young child, then I need to talk to you.' I told her I'm not a mother, but she keeps on talking."

Alphabet Puppets

Seth LOVES to do crafts, but I'll have to admit, we haven't been so crafty lately. Over the weekend we had so much fun making these alphabet puppets. Seth came up with what he wanted to draw for each letter, drew it in pencil and then colored it with markers. We took turns cutting. He put the corresponding letter on the puppet and then glued a mini popsicle stick to each one. I hope this will stir up our creative juices!

Water Balloons

I bought a pack of water balloons on clearance for $.50 and Seth has more than gotten our moneys worth out of them. We had a water balloon toss/fight, blown them up and let them go and played keep it up. He also learned how to blow up balloons. One day we blew up a balloon and let it go over and over for about 30 min with one balloon. Seth giggled non-stop the whole time. It was the best half-a-penny I ever spent!

Sad Day

We had a sad day this week. Our poor little bird Buddy suddenly died. We are all sad to see him go. Without Mark, he would have never existed, Seth loved him dearly and to me he was alike a link to Papa that I no longer have. I never really did get used to that squawking but in a way I'll miss it. It has been the background music to our lives for the past two-and-a-half years.

The cake Stacy made for the party was so impressive that it gets it's own post. It was AMAZING! Dana drew a treasure map on parchment paper and Seth and the kids had to find their way to the cake. At the end of the day, Seth said this was the best part of the day!

Seth had a great birthday. We made cupcakes for him to take to school the night before and they had a little celebration at school. He came home with a birthday crown on his head. I told him I would make anything he wanted for dinner and he asked for tuna salad. When I reminded him that he doesn't like tuna salad, he decided on lasagna. Miles, Carlee and Papa R.. came over for dinner and we had a great time!
